Opening Session
Opening session for Beyond Labels, Beyond Borders: International Solidarity Conference on the Rights of Climate Migrants
Session 1: Setting the Scene
The session aims to highlight the science, economics and politics surrounding the phenomenon of the large scale displacement of communities due to climate change impacts.
Session 2: Climate-induced migration: causes and consequences
Climate change impacts on population movements on a very profound scale. Whether due to slow or rapid onset events, millions are already displaced, usually in the developing world.
Session 3: Reactions and responses: too little, too late?
Naming displaced peoples as ‘climate refugees’, ‘climate migrants’ and other descriptions is the subject of many ongoing debates due to the social, economic, political and governance implications.
Session 4: Intersections and crossroads
Protecting climate migrants is imperative, but the discourse on the intersections of vulnerability with national and international development architecture is largely underdeveloped.
Session 5: Participatory workshops
Self-organized workshops on different related topics organized by the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD), Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law & Development (APWLD), IMA, and Kalikasan and Center for Environmental Concerns
Session 6: Key elements towards protecting the rights of climate migrants
Protecting climate migrants is imperative, but the discourse needs to be expanded to comprehensively address displacement, the causes of displacement, along with proposals for just, sustainable, transformative solutions.
Session 7: Reclaiming hope, reimagining the future: Summary and closing
Process towards adopting the Manila Initiative.
